Breaking Down Barriers

We’ve all been watching the US mid-term elections with great interest and, this morning, WTM is happy to see a number of notable female-centric developments.
Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib are the first Muslim women elected to Congress. Ilham, a Somali refugee, will represent a district in Minneapolis where she replaces Keith Ellison, himself the first Muslim elected to Congress – he has moved on to be Minnesota’s attorney general. Rashida is a Detroit-born social worker, whose parents are Palestinian immigrants.

Deb Haaland and Sharice Davids become the first Native American women to win seats in Congress since it was founded in 1789. And Democrat Aelxandria Ocasio-Cortex, 29, has become the youngest woman.

Ayanna Pressley became the first African American woman elected to Congress from Massachusetts, representing much of the same area as John F Kennedy.
As results were still coming in, more than 100 women were expected to take seats in the House of Representatives- more than ever before. And they come from across the board, from military veterans to teachers and everything in between, many of whom had never run for office before.
