Triathlete and realtor Anastasia Ageeva explains why Amwaj could be the best place to start your New Year fitness regime.

Hello, my fit and healthy readers, have you enjoyed your festive season? Plenty of fun with family and friends, an abundance of fine cuisine and beverages I am sure!
So, it’s back to work! And of course you want your six pack and beach body back ASAP!

Well, luckily the sports season in Bahrain is in full swing and we welcome you to our sports and wellness scene in Amwaj Islands. Take advantage of the cooler winter weather and enjoy the wide variety of sports and fun events being staged around the islands.

RUNNING and WALKING
We run all year in loops of 5km around Amwaj or there is also an 11km loop. We have safe pavements and considerate drivers. There’s a marathon relay team that participates in all the running events on the island. Actually, we’ve been co-hosting The Colour Run, in January, for a number of years, in association with the Bahrain Road Runners.
Experience the glorious sunrises and sunsets over the Arabian Gulf and enjoy the landscaped areas filled with the sounds of birds singing! Check out Loop Amwaj running series on the corresponding Facebook page.
There are also many residents simply enjoying morning and evening walks around Amwaj. It’s the perfect place to walk your dog too!

CYCLING
Like the running, you can ride loops of 5km or more. During the cooler months, many Amwaj Islanders cycle for groceries or over to visit friends. We’ve also hosted a few triathlon events. Lower speed limits and courteous drivers make for a safer cycling environment.

SWIMMING AND WATERSPORTS
Our sparkling, turquoise salt-water lagoons are replenished with the gentle tide and safe for swimming. It’s quite shallow along the beach, and therefore safe for your children.
You can swim for miles! Our most enthusiastic swimmers and triathletes swim like dolphins (which are also regular guests here) navigating 8km around Amwaj.
Snorkelling is also fun with an array of aquatic life to be seen and, if you wish to immerse yourself completely in the marine environment, there is a certified PADI diving centre at Amwaj Marina for diving enthusiasts and those seeking to become certified.

The lagoons offer a safe haven for kayaking too, since there are no motor boats allowed. You can lose yourself in the tranquillity of the waters and enjoy the waterfront views of the luxury properties along the shorelines.

Paddle boarding, which is a great sport for tanning and keeping all your muscles toned (also great for runners’ specific muscle development), is very popular in Amwaj Islands, and for those yoga enthusiasts seeking to perfect their balance, it offers a unique experience.

For the more adventurous, kitesurfing takes advantage of the offshore winds and wakeboarding is organised by residents of the Floating City and Marina Club members. Check out the Amwaj Marina Surfski Club and Kitesurfing Bahrain Facebook pages for their recent activities.

YOGA
There are a few locations for yoga on Amwaj, in Zawia 3 tower, in Meena 7 Maya Gym, Tala Leisure Centre, Equilibrium and the newly opened yoga studio in the Amwaj Marina.

RAQUET SPORTS
Tala Island residents have the benefit of a great tennis court that is well lit in the evening. Squash is also available in Tala Leisure Centre for Tala Island residents.

GYMs
Nearly every building on Amwaj has a well-equipped gym, but you can always get social and join Maya Gym in Meena 7, Tala Island gym for residents, the 24-hour gym in the Lagoon or have fun with the cross-fit gym at Amwaj Business Park.

Amwaj Islands are so much more than a residential area, so why not make it your New Year’s resolution to make the most of being on Amwaj? We look forward to seeing you take care and keep yourself fit.
