Stripes are popular patterns in the clothing world. They can be wide, thin, vertical, horizontal or even diagonal. A democratic print, they can be worn by men, women and children, old and young alike. They are also super-versatile, easily stamping a casual summer dress or a long fancy gown. This season stripes come mostly in colourful versions – bright shades in between dark hues with different widths to create interesting contrasts.

The type of fabric will dictate whether an outfit is evening-ready or more suited for casual daywear. Satin, silk and linen tend to be more elegant, while soft cotton and denim are best used in relaxed outfits. No matter the occasion, this colourful patterning will be much in evidence during the warm days of spring and summer.

Tommy Hilfiger’s youthful collection is full of vibrant lines – pieces that are pool- and beach party-ready. Marc Jacobs opted to stamp lines in two colours for a fun option. Prada’s stripes are interrupted while Sportmax counts on bold and intense hues. Salvatore Ferragamo plays with casual long dresses for easygoing sunny days.

The ribbon stamp is usually seen in informal clothes, however many celebrities have opted to wear it at red carpet events and they definitely steal the scene for laid-back glamour. High-end brands embraced the pattern and sophisticated pencil skirts and handbags have been featuring this simple graphic visual. When opting for stripes, don’t worry if they are vertical or horizontal (even if you feel you have some extra kilos); the cut and fitting are the most important things to worry about here.

Zara embraces two trends with this top. Wear it with high-waist trousers in a solid colour and high-heeled sandals. Definitely best worn by flat tummies!
