This year, The British School of Bahrain (BSB) entered an outstanding delegation of 130 students into the World Scholars Cup (WSC) Bahrain regional round competition held at St. Christopher’s School. The teams of three consisted of twenty-eight junior teams (below 14 years) and seventeen senior teams (above 14 years). The competition was the biggest ever held in Bahrain with over 740 delegates in total competing to be selected for the global round.

This was no easy competition, starting on Friday with the team debates, each team had to debate against three different teams on motions across all the subjects; from policy to poetry. This was followed by the Scholar’s Challenge in the afternoon. The challenge looks like any other test, but with a multiple choice twist of marking more than one answer per question. The fewer you mark, the more points you can earn if you’re correct. The afternoon finished with a collaborative writing activity. In this activity, the scholars debated with the power of the pen. Scholars choose one statement from six different subject areas and either argue for or against them.

The next day brought about further excitement and entertainment, starting with the scholar’s bowl, each team in the auditorium was given a ‘clicker’. The teams worked together to solve analytical questions and multimedia challenges. Each question was harder than the one before. After lunch, the talent show entertained all the students. Talents ranged from demonstrating yoyo skills, performed by our Darsh Bhatia to musical singing champions Anna Zajaczkowska, who sang ‘Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again’ from the musical Phantom of the Opera and Jennika Lucas who had the crowd in awe with her singing ‘Part of Your World’ from The Little Mermaid. One of our first time participants, Sandra Zaki, was selected to participate in the debate showcase, allowing her the opportunity to address the entire audience with her outstanding debate skills. The evening ended with the Awards Ceremony that was also attended by parents.

This was an unforgettable experience for many of our students who have now qualified to the global round, to be held in Beijing, China, in June 2019. Our students enjoyed the experience of learning, interacting and having fun with other students from different schools. Some of the comments received from the students and parents, Vyas Pillai, Year 8 commented, “I am on top of the world with 6 gold and 1 silver medal!” and Maya Almoataz’s mother praised Team BSB, “Congratulations on such a great achievement … What a proud day for us all!”

BSB is very proud of all our students who won medals and trophies. A particular mention must be made for two of our senior teams, who did exceptionally well in the competition! Rishi Malhotra and Smayan Sharma joined Ann Shaj from St. Chris School to win the first place seniors champion team. The runner up team was also our very own Syed Azhan Gilani, Atta Yousafi and Karthik Arun. Four of the seniors top five champion scholars were also from BSB, Rishi Malhotra (2nd), Rose Baslious Salib (3rd), Imran Nasir (4th) and Karthik Arun (5th). We would like to congratulate the 43 teams that have qualified for the global rounds. We would also like to thank the teachers and sixth form volunteers who helped adjudicate the debates and helped in preparing the students for the competition.
