This month, we speak to Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain General Manager, Marie-Berengere Chapoton. She brings a wealth of experience and a global perspective to her role, effectively leaving her mark on destinations all across the world.
Could you tell our readers a little bit about yourself?
With over 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry, I have held leadership positions across multiple continents. My goal is to bring a new era of luxury hospitality to the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Could you give us a brief history on your illustrious career and professional experience to date?
During my 24-year experience in the hospitality industry, I have held strategic leadership roles in luxury destinations across North America, Europe, Asia, South America and the GCC. I have worked at renowned brands like Sofitel and Fairmont, and hold a Bachelor’s degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Ecole Hoteliere de Glion in Switzerland and an MBA in International Hospitality Management from IIMHI Cornell-Essec Business School in France. As the General Manager at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain my goal is to uphold the highest standard of excellence and create unforgettable experiences.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievements in the field of hospitality?
Leading luxury destinations across diverse geographies stands out as a major accomplishment. Creating exceptional guest experiences and fostering team growth, combining practical experience with academic knowledge through my education has been instrumental in my success. These achievements continue to inspire me to strive for excellence in all aspects of my work.
How has your international experience contributed to shaping your career and expertise?
My international experience in hospitality has significantly shaped my career, exposing me to diverse cultures, guest expectations, and market dynamics. This has broadened my perspective, improved my cross-cultural communication skills, and kept me updated on industry trends, enhancing my problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
What are your thoughts on the hospitality sector in Bahrain? How do you intend to contribute to its growth in your professional capacity?
I aim to enhance the guest experience in Bahrain by offering innovative and personalised services, collaborating with local businesses, tourism authorities and cultural organisations to promote the destination as a holistic destination, nurturing local talent for professional growth, and emphasising sustainability and responsible tourism practices to contribute to the sector’s sustainability goals.
What are your thoughts on the role of female professionals in the hospitality field?
Female professionals in the hospitality industry are crucial, bringing unique skills and perspectives. They have excelled in leadership roles, breaking barriers and inspiring others. Raffles is committed to empowering women in leadership, recognising diversity’s importance for innovation and industry growth.
As a successful professional in the hospitality sector, what would be your essential advice to young women entering the field?
To succeed in the hospitality industry, one must believe in themselves, seek mentors, embrace continuous learning, build a professional network, be adaptable, set clear goals and prioritise work-life balance. With confidence, support, and commitment to growth, one can achieve success in this dynamic field.
