Hospital Removes 6.6kg Ovarian Tumour in Successful Operation

A Filipino woman has reclaimed her future after having a 6.6kg ovarian tumour successfully removed by doctors at Tawam Hospital in Al Ain, UAE.

Al Tawam Hospital is part of the SEHA network, a subsidiary of PureHealth, the largest healthcare platform in the Middle East. Ovarian tumours are considered large if they have diameters between five- 15cm and are very difficult to treat successfully unless diagnosed in the early stage. The operation to remove the 30cm-diameter tumour was hailed as a significant achievement that reflects SEHA’s ability to treat the most complex cases swiftly.

The patient had been experiencing debilitating symptoms, including swelling, pain and breathing difficulties before being admitted to hospital. Doctors were quick to recognise the urgency of the situation and conducted a comprehensive examination which revealed a large ovarian tumour, prompting immediate surgical intervention.

Under the expert guidance of Dr Saad Aswad, Consultant Gynecologist, and Dr Bekdash, General Surgeon, the patient underwent a meticulously planned and executed surgical procedure. Following the operation, the patient was discharged in just five days and made a full recovery in two weeks.

Dr Hilal Matta, Chairman of Surgery, states: “We are delighted to report a significant improvement in the patient’s quality of life following the successful surgery.”

“The successful treatment of this complex case is a testament to the professionalism and collaborative approach of our medical teams at Tawam Hospital and across the PureHealth network,” says Dr Saad Aswad. “We recognise that each patient’s journey is unique, and our multidisciplinary approach ensures that every aspect of their care is addressed with utmost compassion and as quickly as possible.”

“Empowering women to take control of their health and wellbeing through compassionate and innovative gynaecological care is my lifelong mission,” he adds.

Following her discharge from Tawam Hospital, the patient now looks forward to a future of restored health with follow-up appointments scheduled to ensure her continued wellbeing.

Ovarian cancer is the eighth most common cancer in women worldwide, with more than 300,000 new cases reported in 2020 and some 200,000 deaths according to World Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Most women diagnosed are over 55 but it can occur in younger people too.
