Peace in Action: Bahrain’s Path to Sustainable Peace

As the world marks the International Day of Peace, Bahrain stands as a beacon of hope, championing dialogue and coexistence. Fatima Al Najem reflects on the Kingdom’s commitment to sustainable peace through its various initiatives.

Each year on September 21st, the International Day of Peace invites us to reflect on our shared aspirations for harmony, tolerance, and cooperation. In Bahrain, this day resonates deeply, as the Kingdom has steadfastly positioned itself as a leader in promoting these values.

A Commitment to Coexistence
Bahrain’s leadership understands that peace is more than the absence of conflict; it is the active cultivation of understanding and collaboration. In a world fraught with challenges like extremism and intolerance, the Kingdom is dedicated to nurturing initiatives that prepare leaders and communities for constructive engagement.

At the heart of this vision is His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s unwavering commitment to coexistence, emphasising respect for human dignity and shared values.

Bridging Cultures
One of Bahrain’s most significant contributions to global peace is the King Hamad Global Centre for Coexistence and Tolerance. This centre serves as a hub for dialogue, fostering initiatives that build bridges between communities and create educational programmes on coexistence and tolerance.

With a focus on education, youth engagement, and cultural exchange, Bahrain’s holistic approach to peacebuilding is evident.

I have had the honour of working at the centre, where I witnessed firsthand the genuine care invested in enlightening youth about coexistence and respect for pluralism. Having lived in three countries and visited over twenty others, I can confidently say that Bahrain’s approach to coexistence is unparalleled.

Participating in the King Hamad Leadership for Coexistence Programme has further solidified my belief in sustainable peace. This initiative goes beyond mere knowledge-sharing; it empowers participants through a train-the-trainer model, ensuring that the values of coexistence multiply.

A Global Initiative
Another milestone is the Joint Programme Postgraduate Diploma on Coexistence, offered in partnership with the University for Peace (UPEACE) and GIOYA HEI. This programme equips aspiring leaders with the skills to foster dialogue and promote tolerance in diverse societies.

As a proud graduate, I am grateful for the insights gained from esteemed professors—ambassadors and ministers who shared invaluable real-world experiences.

A Testament to Diversity
Last week, the second cohort of the diploma programme commenced, uniting 100 students from 63 countries. This diverse group exemplifies Bahrain’s role as a hub for peace education and reflects a commitment to embedding peace within educational frameworks.

A Legacy of Peace
As we celebrate the International Day of Peace, Bahrain’s initiatives exemplify how small nations can create a significant global impact. By linking peace with education, diplomacy, and leadership, Bahrain proves that sustainable peace is a tangible reality, achieved through nurturing coexistence and empowering individuals to bridge divides.

On this day, Bahrain reaffirms its dedication to a more peaceful, tolerant, and interconnected world. Its message is clear: peace is not only possible — it is a shared responsibility.
