Al Majarah Jewellers has been a doyen of Bahrain’s gold industry for decades. Farah Baig speaks to the powerful women behind the brand’s current vision and iconic designs, Krupa Sagar and Trishna Sagar.
A visit to Al Majarah Jewellers is a dazzling experience given the sheer range of Bahraini gold and premium gemstones that have been crafted into iconic pieces.
The gold industry in Bahrain holds significance due to the Kingdom’s historical ties to gold trading and jewellery craftsmanship. “For Al Majarah Jewellers to have been a part of the entire growth process from scratch leading up to the milestones where Bahrain serves as a regional hub for gold trading, attracting buyers and sellers from neighbouring countries is a great privilege,” says Krupa.
Now, this legacy is being taken forward by Krupa and Trishna who are nothing short of gold standard jewellers. “Coming from generational goldsmith families, the art of design and craftsmanship is rooted in tradition for us. So naturally, when the time came, we decided to actively participate in innovation and modernisation within the commercial aspect of the business,” she adds.
The two women have completely different skill sets, which enables them to create a synergy that amplifies their individual talents and strengths. “It helps us explore new possibilities that neither could achieve alone. The mutual support and encouragement help us push our boundaries, enabling continuous learning and growth, one holding creative and the other technical expertise. We bring ideas to life with a balance of innovation and practicality,” says Trishna.
When it comes to design and manufacturing gold jewellery, Al Majarah Jewellers has been a trendsetter with designs such as the entirely handmade handkerchief motif of the 90s, which required special skills to manufacture. “Now, you can find an amalgamation of timeless and universally admired, bespoke jewellery pieces, as well as read- to-wear smart, practical and design-oriented pieces,” she says.
The duo has cast a wide net when it comes to design inspiration with each drawing from personal experiences and artistic influences. “Nature, architecture, history, art and even everyday objects can spark creative ideas. You will also find a lot of our designs stemming from emotions, memories and personal stories,” says Krupa warmly. “For us it’s about keeping an open mind and letting our imagination run wild.”
Popular designs include the signature THEKRIYAT necklace which is available in three variations featuring yellow gold, white gold, diamonds or your choice of gemstones with Bahraini pearls. “One of our other loved pieces, the flip wheel necklace portrays the subtle contrast and duality present in life. All elements and pieces belonging to this necklace set, including the earrings and ring, can be worn on both sides: traditional and contemporary. It’s exceptionally unique!” she says.
Al Majarah Jewellers recently launched its flagship store in the heart of Manama at the exact location where it all started in 1975. “What sets us apart from others in the area is our focus on offering a highly personalised experience, crafting unique pieces tailored to individual taste and preferences. It provides our clients with an opportunity to collaborate closely with skilled artisans bringing their vision to life. This approach has enabled us to form deep connections with clients while creating pieces that resonate on a deeply personal level,” they share.
“Our ultimate vision for Al Majarah would be to become a global brand and continue to craft pieces that can be forever cherished. We hope that our legacy of design and manufacturing will be passed on for generations to come.”
