A couple are said to have “subfertility or infertility” when, after trying for a baby with unprotected intercourse for a year, they are still not able to conceive. Let’s clear some prevalent myths about subfertility and its treatment.
Myth: Success rate: Success is sure with IVF.
The success of IVF can be seen at different steps of the process, which can be different. But the real success rate, of taking a full-term baby home, is around 35-40 per cent for women under 35.
Myth: Ovarian reserve: Female egg (ovum) can be retrieved at any age / you need not worry about your age, IVF is always solution.
With increasing age, the ovarian reserve for ovum /ova decreases. So does the success of getting pregnant, even with IVF.
Myth: Subfertility affects women more than men.
In cases of subfertility, the female factor alone is responsible for 40 per cent of cases; the male factor alone accounts for 40 per cent and a combined problem is seen in 20 per cent of cases. So, this means, males and females both share equal chances of having a problem. In spite of normal sexual activity and normal volume semen production in the male, the reason for subfertility can be lying in the quality and transport of sperm.
Myth: Adoption may increase your chances of getting pregnant.
These incidences are exceptional, and the logic of becoming relaxed after adoption, which may increase chances of getting pregnant, is not always true.
Myth: Most people need IVF treatment
Assisted reproduction therapy (ART) encompasses many treatments like ovulation induction, intra uterine insemination and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Depending on your factors, your infertility specialist will guide on the most suitable treatment for you.
Myth: Young men and women can’t be infertile
There are more women struggling with fertility after age 35, but almost one in 10 face infertility even before they reach age 30.
Myth: IVF frequently leads to multiple pregnancy
This is partially true, but with the advent of elective single embryo transfer chances of this are reduced.
Myth: Fertility lubricants can help you conceive without fertility treatment
Obviously this is very simple answer to a complex problem, which is not true.
Myth: If you already have a child, you don’t need to worry about fertility
The term “secondary infertility” means facing difficulty in conceiving when you already have a child. Life is dynamic, so is the biology of the body. New medical conditions can give rise to secondary infertility.
Myth: You can simply change your diet and lifestyle to cure infertility
This helps to some extent; having a healthy diet, nutritional food, relaxed mind, ideal body weight and avoidance of toxins and substances like alcohol and smoking is always advisable. But it simply won’t translate into success. Over and above, some so called herbal things may cause more harm than good.
