If the pastels don’t take your fancy, there is another way to do colour-blocking and it’s loud, bright and in your face. Orange and blue, turquoise and pink — go for it!

Reach for the Rainbow

Okay, so pastels are quite girly and florals aren’t much better. For those of you who love a bit of staple dressing and don’t buy into the “pale is beautiful” idea, SS12 has a trend to suit your tastes. Technicolours are fighting with the pastels for prominence and they too are arranging themselves in blocks of one colour at a time.

As you can see from our runway images, picking a single shade for an entire ensemble is pretty popular, but this isn’t the only way to do this trend. There are loads of really brilliant separates which display more than one colour block per item, or even make use of thick stripes in the more popular hues.

Most designers have gone with modern cuts and lines within this trend, giving it a futuristic feel. High-necks are in, as are long, straight, thick skirts, as seen on the Roksanda Ilincic catwalk.
