As the region’s football lovers gear-up for an exciting opening match when hosts Russia play Saudi Arabia, Arab women are celebrating another first that coincides with the match.

Today, for the first time ever, an all-female Saudi delegation will lead the Green Falcons (Saudi football team) into the game. Six Saudi girls, between ages 13 and 17, were chosen to participate in the games under Coca-Cola’s FlagBearers Program. “We are delighted to support the changes that are happening in Saudi Arabia and spread the message of inclusion, diversity and support by championing these Saudi girls who are role models for the future generation of the Kingdom,” said Murat Ozgel, general manager of Coca-Cola Middle East.

On January 12 this year, for the first time ever Saudi women attended a Saudi Pro League football match at the King Abdullah Sports City stadium in Jeddah. Saudi women are also counting down to June 24, when the kingdom lifts its decades-long ban on women driving. All these initiatives are part of reforms spearheaded by the kingdom’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
